Oriented Neuropsychological Evaluation

Noticing changes in memory, thinking, or behavior can be unsettling. At Compass Cognition, neuropsychological evaluation helps patients and their providers understand what is happening — and what to do next.

What to expect

Every evaluation is conducted personally from start to finish. The clinical interview and testing take place in the same appointment — everything completed in a single visit. The interview can take up to an hour, followed by approximately two to three hours of testing.

Each evaluation includes a tailored battery of tests selected around the referral question — time is not spent on testing that will not inform the answers you need. A written report is typically completed within one to two weeks of the appointment. Results are communicated clearly — to providers, patients, or both, depending on the referral.

What to bring

  • Photo ID
  • List of current medications
  • Any prior neuropsychological or psychological testing records
  • Completed intake paperwork — sent in advance

What we assess

Evaluations are tailored to the referral question — whether you are a provider sorting out a diagnostic puzzle or a patient trying to make sense of changes you have been noticing.

Dementia & Cognitive Decline

Evaluation of memory and cognitive complaints to help distinguish normal aging from dementia, and to inform the differential diagnosis — Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, frontotemporal dementia, or others.

Neurological Disorders

Cognitive evaluation in the context of stroke, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and other neurological conditions — documenting cognitive functioning, tracking change over time, and supporting medical and surgical decision-making.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Cognitive evaluation following mild, moderate, or severe TBI — characterizing the pattern of strengths and weaknesses, tracking recovery, and providing documentation to support treatment and accommodations.

Cancer & Brain Tumors

Cognitive evaluation for patients with primary or metastatic brain tumors, or those experiencing cognitive effects of cancer treatment — establishing baseline functioning, assessing treatment effects, and supporting decisions about work, driving, and daily activity.

Psychiatric & Mood Disorders

When mood and memory are both affected, it can be hard to know where one ends and the other begins. Evaluation helps bring that into focus — and points toward more targeted treatment.

Pre-Surgical Psychological Evaluation

Pre-surgical psychological evaluation for patients being considered for interventional pain procedures — including spinal cord stimulators, peripheral nerve stimulators, and intrathecal drug delivery systems — as well as bariatric surgery, plastic surgery, and other procedures requiring psychological clearance prior to surgery.

Referring a patient

Compass Cognition works closely with neurologists, psychiatrists, primary care physicians, and other mental health providers to answer the cognitive questions that matter most to patient care. Referrals are welcome for any adult where cognitive functioning is in question.

Referring providers receive a detailed, readable report within one to two weeks of evaluation completion.

Common questions

How long does an evaluation take?

The clinical interview and testing are completed in the same appointment. The interview can take up to an hour, followed by approximately two to three hours of testing. The battery is tailored to the referral question, so time is not spent on testing that will not inform the answers you need.

Do you accept insurance?

Compass Cognition is in network with Medicare. For patients with commercial insurance, the practice is out of network — a superbill is provided so you can seek reimbursement through your out-of-network benefits. Checking your plan before your appointment is recommended. Fees are discussed openly during the intake call.

Can I self-refer, or do I need a physician's referral?

You are welcome to reach out directly. A physician's referral is not required. A brief intake call helps confirm that a neuropsychological evaluation is the right fit for your questions.

What should I bring to my appointment?

A photo ID, a list of current medications, and any prior testing records you have. Intake paperwork is sent in advance — completing it beforehand helps us make the most of our time together.

How soon will I receive my results?

Reports are typically completed within one to two weeks of testing. Results are communicated clearly — to providers, patients, or both, depending on the referral.

Do you see patients outside of Indianapolis?

The practice is located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Neuropsychological testing requires an in-person visit — it is not something that we do remotely — but patients do travel from outside the area for evaluation.
